Road construction along 17th avenue ignites block party amongst impacted restaurants
The road is closed but business is still open. On Sunday September 3, restaurants in the 300 and 400 blocks of 17 avenue are embracing the restricted streets for a Roadblock Party. Model Milk, Pigeonhole, Anju, Buttermilk, and newly opened Calcutta Cricket Club will be serving up exclusive dishes, cocktails, and more. With live music and a pop-up retail market, the event is a reminder that doors are still open during road construction.
The city’s decision to reconstruct 17 avenue raised concerns amongst many business owners. While much-needed improvements look promising, the imminent road closures present a daunting challenge. Months of unsightly construction and decreased accessibility along one of the city’s busiest roadways have the potential to severely impede business for many restaurants, bars, and shops. Driven to find a creative solution, the team at Model Milk reached out to friends and neighbours and Roadblock Party was born.
"We were a little bit nervous when they announced plans for a major road closure," states Chef and Owner of Model Milk and Pigeonhole Justin Leboe. "We realized that other restaurants are impacted by the construction, so we decided to collaborate together and remind Calgarians that we are still open for business."
From 11:00am to 11:00pm on September 3, each restaurant will host a series of activities, vendors, and live entertainment. Patrons are encouraged to spend the day visiting all five restaurants to sample the following:
