Addiction has become a pandemic situation in Calgary and around the country. Recovery Day was established to profile a solution by using the faces and voices to smash stigma around addiction. There has never been a more critical time. If not NOW, when!
Calgary is taking to the streets joining countless Canadians in a nationwide call to action in unison saying recovery is possible, attainable and something to celebrate. Like the United States and UK, September is recognized as "Recovery Month" - These events are created to provide venues for people to gather and publicly step out of the shadows and out of church basements to share their faces and voices. Canadians are taking their message of hope to the streets and saying in unison recovery saves lives and restores families.
Calgary’s Fifth Annual Recovery Day takes place at SHAW Millennium Park on Sunday, September 10th from 12:00pm 3pm. The event is being accompanied by an official proclamation signed by the honorable Mayor Nenshi recognizing Recovery Day in the City of Calgary. The celebration will include pop band Econoline Crush, Aboriginal dancers and international interventionist and person in recovery, Bob Marier.
There will be 37 addiction recovery service booths representing Calgary¹s front line support services. Calgary is proud to join 34 cities across Canada coast to coast hosting these events in September recognizing September as Recovery Month.
There are close to 5 million people in recovery in Canada-this is a constituency of consequence. When you add their friends, families, and allies, you are talking about 80-90% of the population being affected. For too long people in Recovery have been silent. Times are changing and we have found our voice.
