$1.1 Million Love Lies Bleeding Production Makes Company History!
Alberta Ballet is poised to make history with the world premiere of Love Lies Bleeding, inspired by and featuring the music of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, in Calgary, May 6, 2010.
“Sir Elton John’s magnificent compositional skills, the highly complex rhythmic motifs and unforgettable melodies commanded the collaboration of six internationally acclaimed designers to build an electrifying portrayal of the challenges and triumphs of pop stardom”, stated Jean Grand-Maître. “The $1.1 million investment in presenting this contemporary pop ballet to the world has allowed Alberta Ballet to develop a fusion of dance, extravagant costuming and sophisticated integration of sound, light and video using state of the art technology.”
Alberta Ballet’s internationally acclaimed roster of dancers will soar and give athletic life to fourteen of the 20th century’s most memorable songs. “It was important for us that we have one hell of a great time dancing to these extraordinarily uplifting grooves and unforgettable melodies. Really I compare this production more to a Broadway show than a traditional ballet”, stated Jean Grand-Maître.
Audiences will experience fourteen dramatic scenes complete with five elaborate piano sets over-laid by a dazzling display of sound, light and video imagery. Alberta Ballet’s dancers will bring the show to life through jazz and street dance, Cirque-style aerials, and dancing on roller skates. The show also features over 150 extravagant costumes and 440 accessories, including 60 custom designed wigs.

Love Lies Bleeding premieres in Alberta from May 6-9, 2010 in Calgary and from May 11-12, 2010 in Edmonton.
All performances take place at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary.
