New HIV Single Tablet Regimen (STR) Poised to Represent the Next Generation of Safe, Simple and Highly-Effective Regimens
New data presented at the International AIDS Society 2015 conference in Vancouver demonstrate the potential of an investigational once-daily STR to help address the life-long care for a range of persons living with HIV.
The study met its primary endpoint by demonstrating non-inferiority of E/C/F/TAF* to the TDF-based regimens (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) at Week 48 and showed significant benefits for patients switching from a current TDF-containing regimen including:
Statistically superior virologic success rates at Week 48 (among patients with HIV-1 RNA levels less than 50 copies/ML)
Statistically significant improvements from baseline to Week 48 in mean bone mineral density at the hip and spine
Significant improvement in multiple tests of renal (kidney) function
*E/C/F/TAF is a single tablet containing elvitegravir 150 mg, cobicistat 150 mg, emtricitabine 200 mg and tenofovir alafenamide 10 mg
The results of the this study demonstrate that E/C/F/TAF has the potential to offer clear advantages for patients with HIV over existing TDF-based therapies. TAF is an investigational novel nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that has demonstrated high antiviral efficacy at a dose less than one-tenth that of Viread (TDF).
