On Saturday September 19th, 2015 hundreds of Edmontonians will take part in a 5km non-athletic walk to help raise awareness and funds for HIV and AIDS programs, services and education. All money raised will stay in our city to help those living with the virus. The goal is to get to ZERO: zero new HIV transmissions, zero discrimination, zero AIDS related deaths. Our theme is "Heroes for Zero", with folks dressing up and fighting HIV stigma and discrimination donned in capes! The walk will start with an introduction by MLA Laurie Blakemen and the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose (ISCWR) will launch the stage with a full hero-themed drag show, we then bring you Audrey and the Crashers, a full ten-piece swing band sure to get the park rocking. To remind us why the AIDS Walk is still relevant we have Aaron Singleton, who will be speaking about his father, who died of AIDS-related illness. We are also expecting guests such as Mike Chalut from 91.7 The Bounce, to attend the event!
This year, Fat Franks will be providing the post walk meal, followed by a family-friendly beer garden brought to us by our friends at Fruit Loop and the Yukon Brewery. The beer gardens will be open until 10 pm and then we will head to the Fruit Loop after-party at El Cortez! It’s sure to be a great night, helping us celebrate how far we have come in the fight against HIV and AIDS, though reminding Edmonton that we still have a long way to go before we fulfil our vision of ZERO.
