As Jer’s Vision enters its 5th year of programming, the organization is going home to work with the community to educate and celebrate diversity in Sault Ste Marie!
Jer’s Vision started 5 years ago when founder Jeremy Dias challenged his former school and school board (Algoma District) in a Human Right Case, and won Canada’s second largest human rights settlement. Dias used the settlement to create Canada’s first national diversity scholarship In the last 5 years, the scholarship has evolved into an international organization educating youth all over the world about diversity, and supporting youth in their efforts to stop discrimination, homophobia and transphobia in schools and communities. Jer’s Vision is also a lead organization in the International Day of Pink.
Over the next 4 days, Jer’s Vision will be participating and keynoting the Focus on the Gay Family conference, northern Ontario’s first LGBTQ conference, looking at the how to stop homophobia and transphobia in Sault Ste. Marie and area.
Jer’s Vision has also teamed up with the Algoma District School board, and will be organizing diversity workshops and assembly presentations in numerous high schools.
"This is a historic event for my hometown. For many people it will be the first time that they will engage in a conversation about addressing discrimination and stigma toward the LGBTQ communities, and more importantly, work together at building solutions to stop all forms of discrimination and bullying, especially homophobia and transphobia" said Dias in an interview.
Dias will be speaking at the Focus on the Gay Family Conference on Saturday the 19th of September, and then doing an assembly presentation at his former school Sir James Dunn on Monday the 21st of September.
