Rebecca Northan is once again brining 'spontaneous theatre' mainstream with her new project, Legend Has It, an improvised play set in a world of fantasy-sdventure. The production
will receive two public workshop performances at the Loose Moose Theatre
beginning this June, and will feature an all-star cast of Canada's top improv
talent and welcome a new audience to the Calgary theatre community: NERDS.
"Calgary is nerd-central and we love it," said
creator Rebecca Northan, who hopes that audiences take advantage of this
production to let out their inner nerd. "Cosplayers are welcome to come in
costume, LARPERs are invited in character, anyone who loves a good adventure
story is will love it – I just want people to show up ready to play. Everyone
is a Hero in their own life – we want to give them a chance to experience that
LIVE in 3D!"
A brother and sister need your help to save their
world.
The world
of Jarð is beleaguered by the evil villain, Haldor (played by Mark Meer,
notably famous in the 'nerd community' for his portrayal of Commander Sheppard
in Biowware's hit video game, Mass Effect). An ancient scroll
foretells the arrival of a Hero from a distant realm who has the power to
defeat him. When Ari and Eydis recite the incantation opening a portal through
space and time, the adventure begins: one audience member will be invited up on
stage to join the cast of this Fantasy-Adventure and step into the role of the
Hero or Heroine to help brother and sister duo defeat the evil Haldor. Legend
Has It, directed by and starring Northan, unites the improvisational
forces of Loose Moose Theatre alumni Renée Amber (Wind Up Dames),
Jamie Northan (Truth or Dare), and Bruce Horak (This Is
Cancer) as co-stars and collaborators. Why settle for a 2D
game when you can cross the threshold into a 3D adventure?!
"The idea for Legend Has It came
while I was in talks with ATP about creating a piece for playRites," said Northan.
"I pitched them a totally different idea initially and instead ATP
challenged me to build on my Blind Date experience,
which is definitely more risky and exciting, and right up my alley. I heard
that and thought, "YES!" Northan's award-winning improvised show, Blind
Date, in which a gentleman from the audience is invited on
stage for a fully improvised blind date, brought spontaneous theatre
to the mainstream with a string of sold-out houses across Canada, and the US,
including a sold-out run off-Broadway in NYC. The show is currently playing in
London's West End.
With the incredible rise of pop and fantasy culture in
Calgary being demonstrated by the success of events like Calgary Comic and
Entertainment Expo (Calgary's 'comic con' has an abnormally high local
audience), Northan recognized two things: first, there is a large demographic
in Calgary familiar with play and fantasy hungry for opportunities to gather,
and secondly, that there were few 'mainstream' theatrical experiences that
appeal to both the average theatre-goer and this previously 'niche' nerd
audience. Legend Has It will be the best of both worlds
- merging Northan's singular brand of spontaneous improvised storytelling with
a genre rarely seen on Canadian stages.
Legend Has It
will present its first public
preview June 12-15 at the Loose Moose Theatre. Audience members are encouraged
to dress up, offer feedback, and engage with the creators.
