Facts about World Outgames 2009

World Outgames 2009 fact sheet:
- World Outgames 2009 will take place from 25 July to 2 August 2009.
- World Outgames 2009 is an international sports, culture and human rights event celebrating the talents and contributions of LGBT men and women (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender persons) of all over the world.
- World Outgames 2009 is an inclusive event. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate, regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or religion.
- This is the second time that World Outgames takes place. The first time was in Montreal, Canada in 2006.
- World Outgames 2009 expects to attract well over 8000 registered participants, primarily from Europe, North America and Australia.
- Attracting participants and thereby knowledge and experience from Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia, Africa and South America is a priority - coordinated and supported by an ‘Outreach Program”.
- In addition to the paying participants, World Outgames 2009 is expected to attract many other tourists and of course the friends, family and colleagues of the participants.
- The total number of tourists expected specifically for Outgames is 10,000, but up to 650,000 other people – from Copenhagen, Denmark and the rest of the world will experience World Outgames up close as spectators.
- The total budget for World Outgames 2009 is 54 million DKK (approx 7.2 mill Euro), of which Copenhagen’s Municipality has granted the first 25 million DKK (approx 3,5 mill Euro). World Outgames also received a grant of 6.1 mil DKK (approx 805,000 Euro) from the National Marketing Fund administered by the Ministry for Economics and Business Affairs.
- The remaining financing will come from public and private funds, sponsors and participation fees. Sponsors include SAS, IBM, Tuborgfondet, HIVOS from the Netherlands (Humanist Institute for Co-operation with Developing Countries) and ILGA-Europe. An additional 10 million DKK will be generated by participants’ fees.
- World Outgames as a total event is expected to benefit Copenhagen and Denmark with an income of 120 million DKK (approx 16.1 mill Euro), through consumption, hotels, etc.
- The three programme pillars – sports, culture and human rights – are equally important. In the sports domain there are 38 sports disciplines. The biggest event in the cultural domain – OutCities – invites important foreign cities to use a public space in the city centre to present an arts and culture programme. The international human rights conference will focus on 10 professional, cultural and political topics concerning the LGBT community and will be held at Denmark’s Radio Concert Hall and at the IT University.
- The daily responsibility for developing, running and evaluating World Outgames 2009 lies with the administration team that was established at the beginning of 2007. The team consists for the time being of 20 full-time members of staff and an extensive network of volunteers.
- The overall responsibility for the project lies with a board of directors, whose collective competence reflect the professional content, high ambitions and complexity of World Outgames.
- The rights to World Outgames are owned by the international sports organization GLISA: Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association.
