About Calgary Roller Derby Association
The CRDA is an all-woman, skater-run flat-track
roller derby league with over 50 members. Formed in 2006 by a small group of
skaters that were determined to bring the sport to Calgary, the league has
grown exponentially in both size and popularity. The inaugural season in 2007
had only two teams playing, and the CRDA is now home to three house teams, one
all-star travel team, and over 30 fresh meat players at most points in the
season. The home teams you will see this season on the track are the Thrashin’
Lassies, the B-52 Bellas, and the Cut Throat Car Hops. The travel team, Hellion
Rebellion, will be seeing action as they take on other leagues throughout North
America.
The league is structured so that every member has the chance to be involved in
the organization – both on and off the track. We welcome women of all shapes,
sizes, age, backgrounds and professions who have a basic skating ability. All
we ask is that you are committed to having a good time, being part of an
enthusiastic and dedicated team, and are willing to try something new!
About Roller Derby
Roller Derby is a battle on wheels between two
teams of five girls skating around an elliptical track. It is in essence a race
between two girls, one from each team, who are the only players able to score
points. Distinguished by the stars on their helmets, these two racers are the
"jammers". They need to work their way through a pack of 8 moving
obstacles called "blockers".
Half of these are trying to help each of the jammers by whipping them forward
and protecting them, while the other half are trying to take them out. After
one initial clean pass through the blockers, a lead jammer is established and
gains control of the game. At any time during a two-minute jam, she can tap her
hips to end it. On the second pass through the blockers, the jammers begin
earning points by passing each of the girls on the opposing team in a legal
manner. They continue to lap the pack for two minutes or until the lead jammer
calls the jam off.
Contrary to popular belief, there are many rules to roller derby and many
illegal hits that can land a player in the penalty box. Trips, grabs, elbows
and fist-fighting are all illegal – but bone-jarring hip-checks, shoulder
barges and booty blocks are totally legit.
A roller derby game is called a bout, and consists of two 30-minute halves in
which as many jams as possible are played.
