Canadian Series Dorian Gray Picked Up By Global LGBTQ Streaming Service

There is a lot of quality queer content being made in Canada, but given the regulatory framework surrounding funding and distribution it can be difficult for independent or digital storytellers to reach a broader audience.

It seems a shame that people outside of Canada often have difficulty discovering hits like The Switch – one of the first shows to feature all trans actors in trans roles - or Hug-O-Gram, a hilarious digital series filmed in Calgary, or The Soliloquies of Santiago, a refreshingly original series loosely based on Shakespeare’s Othello.

Recently, however, much of Canada’s best queer content is being picked up by REVRY, the first global LGBTQ digital streaming service. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the company offers its unique selection of "queerated" movies, TV shows, digital series, music, and podcasts on its mobile, web-based, and over-the-top television-based service. In addition, REVRY boasts a Canadian connection in the form of CEO Damian Pelliccione, a Toronto native. Damian relocated to the United States many years ago but has kept his eye on the Canadian scene ever since and that interest is paying off well with his niche company.

"I always knew Canadian creativity was at the top of the list, especially when it came to adapting to new technology or mediums like digital and web-based content," Damian said. "Canada has always been a place where creators from all over the world can highlight their international content, a fact about my home country that I’m tremendously proud of," he says. "I’m thrilled to be able to offer a similar level of support when it comes to distribution and help these creators get their stories heard by people all around the world."

REVRY’s support of the Canadian creative community has been taken up a notch recently, when the streaming service officially backed Canadian production company Cycle 66 (the team behind the aforementioned Soliloquies), for their daring and sexy reimagining of the Oscar Wilde novel, Dorian Gray. Set in contemporary times, the project delves into the supernatural as a young art history researcher pursues his boss' sinister secret life, uncovering a hidden world of intrigue, magic and illusion.

"We've long been proud of Canada's contributions to the international webseries scene, where as an industry we often punch above our weight," says RJ Lackie, Cycle 66 producer, Canadian Screen Award-nominated screenwriter, and creator of Dorian Gray. "With REVRY's support, we are really excited to help show the world what Canadian digital producers are capable of."

The project is currently under consideration by the Independent Production Fund (IPF) and REVRY is excited to commit to global distribution and promotion for the project. Be sure to check out the trailer here and show your support for quality, independent, queer Canadian filmmaking!
