Provocative performance digging up dark side of male privilege, patriarchy, and gender roles - but are audiences brave enough to see it?

Cloudsway Dance Theatre is set to debut with a bang: The Golden Penis is a highly physical new piece examining the male dominated structures of power and privilege April 12-16, 2017 at the West Village Theatre. This game-changing performance weaves story, myth, and lived experience to provide a male feminist’s outlook on contemporary masculinity.

"Male privilege and rape culture are real" says creator Mark Kunji Ikeda, "it’s terrifying to realize how I have helped perpetuate them." With these dark themes thriving in our cultural consciousness, Ikeda offers a daring perspective the best way he knows how: on stage. With a cast of ten men and four women, expect to be moved and disturbed by the power of the body.

"The theatre should be a place to be triggered. This is your trigger warning: there will be sensuality, sexuality, nudity, there will be offensive and violent subject matter, you should be uncomfortable." Ikeda hopes this production will help spur more men to take an active role in feminism and societal health. "We are trying to portray these topics with equal parts sensitivity and fearlessness," to that end Ikeda is bringing on an artistic team including dramaturg Christopher Duthie (writer of n00b and Of Fighting Age) as well as the Calgary Sexual Health Society’s WiseGuyz program leader (and Calgary theatre mainstay) Stafford Perry.

After years of training with One Yellow Rabbit, and serving as Artistic Director of MoMo Dance Theatre for two seasons, Mark Kunji Ikeda cultivates the next generation of physically demanding, sensually charged physical theatre to Calgary. "This is a show Michael Green and Denise Clarke would be proud of" asserts Ikeda. His radical combination of choreography, narrative and poetry lead to being named the 2015 Enbridge Emerging Artist Award winner. His solo performance piece Sansei: The Storyteller, which contextualizes the Japanese Canadian Internment, continues to tour nationally.
