Introducing Offcuts 2016, Calgary’s finest stripped-down charity calendar, officially off the presses and ripe for purchasing through the waning weeks of 2015.
The unconventional 12-month calendar is a celebration of the culinary muscle behind Calgary’s restaurant scene. It boldly features a dozen quasi-celebrity foodies who’ve devoted their lives to bringing the best cuisine on the planet to Cowtown, now bravely committing themselves to baring it (almost) all in the name of a great cause.
Taking inspiration from a shirtless chef calendar created in Edmonton the year before, Knifewear and Kent of Inglewood owner Kevin Kent decided it was high time the ‘handsome’ men at the helm of Calgary’s restaurant industry should share a similar shirtless fate.
"I loved the idea and decided to create a Calgary version of the charity calendar because, while we are an affluent city, some families need a bit of help," said Kent, shirtless at the September shoot. "All of the time and energy that went into bringing this project to life was generously donated, meaning we are in turn able to donate 100% of calendar sale proceeds to our favourite local charity, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids."
Among those donated services was the professional photography of camera legend Jeremy Fokkens, who shot all 12 months of Offcuts in unique locales around town, from the Bow River to a basement meat locker.
Kent and his fellow calendar stars are hopeful Calgarians will see the merit in stuffing their loved ones’ stockings with The Offcuts 2016 calendar this holiday season, knowing their $20 purchase will feed 20 hungry local school kids a healthy lunch.
"We are experiencing an enormous increase in need across our city," said Tanya Koshowski, executive director of Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids. "The awareness and support from this outstanding group of food experts will ensure we achieve our goal of no hungry kids in Calgary, while building a stronger, more resilient community."
Following the Tuesday, Oct. 27 reveal at Kent of Inglewood, the coveted calendar will be available for purchase at all of the fine restaurants and retailers the 12 Offcuts represent, from Alloy, CHARCUT and Open Range to Phil & Sebastian, Sidewalk Citizen and Vine Arts Wine and Spirits.
