For 13 days this summer, The Works Art & Design Festival, presents “EARTH”, culminating The Works third themed year focusing on environmental consciousness and sustainability. With the idea that awareness leads to positive change, featured exhibits will bring together art, sustainability and social responsibility in a stimulating way, all while encouraging discussion. For The Works 25th year, more than 400 artists are showcased in 28 sites, in 40 venues with over 200 special events. The Works Art & Design Festival is open to the general public, where everyone from all ages can take advantage of the free art programs where they can create their own art works, witness Artists at Work Demonstrations and attend Featured Artists lectures and events all while enjoying Canadian performers on The Works Street Stage, a vibrant Art Market, and the world class Food Street.
The Works Art & Design Festival is the first festival of Edmonton's summer season with world-renowned art exhibits which are enlightening, any way you look at it. The Works, the largest Art & Design Festival of its kind in North America, is a FREE event that showcases the best in cutting edge design, digital art and new media technology alongside traditional visual art mediums. Between 1986 and 2010, more than 5.6 million visitors will have experienced 14,000 Artists and Designers from every continent in 1,172 exhibits in and around Edmonton's Downtown.
For its second year The Works Art & Design Festival’s Canadian Aboriginal Artists Program, presents contemporary artists working in various media and addressing big picture issues that face Canada’s First Nations and environment. Featured in The Works Big Tent Site #1 will be Maureen Enns – “A Wild Horse Landscape”, Olivia Kachman – “Out of the Blue & into the Red”, Lawrence Paul Yuxweleptun & Curtis Santiago – “Infinity”, with Leah Dorion’s “Island” at Site #11 EPCOR Building, and “Turtle Rock Effigy” located at Site #24 Louise McKinney Park.
