Ontario leadership hopeful Frank Klees (MPP Newmarket-Aurora), recently endorsed by the anti-abortion Campaign Life Coalition, has been getting campaign help from the notoriously homophobic fundamentalist leader Charles McVety. McVety issued an email on Klees's behalf, urging people to join the Conservative party and vote in the June 25 leadership contest.
The two have a long connection, dating back to at least 1999 when Klees introduced a private members bill to have McVety's Canada Christian College (CCC) accredited as a degree-granting institution in Ontario. The college had previously had its status revoked in 1982 because of concerns from donors about tax receipts and the work of the institution. The same year, McVety donated $1000 to Klees's re-election fund.
This connection has continued to the present day, so much so that when Klees decided to launch his nomination for the provincial leadership he made an unofficial announcement on McVety's program Word.ca.
Klees has also attended the graduation ceremonies at CCC multiple times since the re-accreditation of the institution, including in 2002 at which time he said in the legislature that "it was a pleasure to see. the student body that was there and the degrees that were being handed out."
