On the eve of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Hillhurst United Church will be hosting a Vigil. An invitation to join together in support of LGBTQ athletes who will be in Sochi as well as all LGBTQ people who are subject to Russia’s discriminatory laws.

"The word ‘Vigil’ means ‘awake’ or ‘watch’", says Hillhurst United’s Affirming Coordinator, Pam Rocker. "One thing we want to do is set aside time to remember and be aware of the harsh reality that so many LGBTQ people face, not only in Russia, but around the world. In Canada, it can be tempting to think that we’ve ‘arrived’ and that the safety and security that many of us have is what the majority of others experience as well. But tragically, that’s not the case."

For Hillhurst United, creating a space for this Vigil in a faith community was an important piece.

"Less than 50 years ago, homosexuality was still illegal in Canada and many people had similar attitudes towards LGBTQ people as are being displayed in present day Russia," says Rocker. "Because some of their beliefs are purported to have their roots in a faith tradition, it’s vital that fully inclusive faith communities speak out publicly to say that we believe wholeheartedly in the beauty and diversity of everyone. It’s not simply a message of ‘we won’t try to change you’ but that there is nothing to change."

Thoughts for the LGBTQ athletes in Sochi are top of mind, as their simple presence may warrant acts of discrimination or even violence.

"This Vigil isn’t about boycotting - or not. It’s about calling attention to the reality that no one should have to be asked to live, compete, or participate in something that does not respect and defend their human rights."

Hillhurst United has invited many faith community leaders, artists, athletes, and politicians, to attend or speak at this event.

Rocker says, "This is an invitation for everyone, regardless of their faith background, to join with others in a sacred time and place. Activism looks different for everyone, but it’s important that whatever we are called to do, we step up and support others, locally and internationally, in whatever way we can."

This peaceful event is open to the public and is taking place at Hillhurst United, 1227 Kensington Close, NW, Calgary on Thursday, February 6, 7pm. More info at www.hillhurstunited.com
