Karen Porkka is an Edmonton based multi-disciplinary artist. With a diverse artistic background, working in musical genres such as world, folk, pop, R&B, musical theatre, classical sax quartets, free improvisation and performance art, Karen is a composer, collaborator and teacher in her own private studio. As a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist she has made improvisation her artistic focus. Inspired by great master teachers she has created the Vocal Improvisation Network of Edmonton (V.I.N.E.) where singers gather together to spontaneously create music using their voices and bodies.
As part of the Arts Collective Program at Robertson-Wesley United Church, Karen Porkka will be leading vocal improvisation workshops each Sunday evening from April 12 to May 31st. In connection with the Arts Collective Program, workshops explore spirituality through art. The Spiritual Arts Collective process allows people to meet and explore a life forming, spiritual question that enables the group to create something. We provide an empowering and safe place for participants journey through the arts, whether visual, drama, dance, music, literary, community initiatives or political commentaries. The collective process has the power to create strong relationships and build trust. It is up to the group to determine how and where they share their creation.
This Collective will use vocal improvisation as a means for self-expression. Participants will learn and apply the fundamentals of spontaneously creating music in community using voice and body percussion.
Sing Yourself Inside/Out with Karen Porkka starts April 12 at 4:00pm, Robertson-Wesley United Church. It’s free to attend. Please go to http://www.rwuc.org/sac8.html to register and for more information.
