Dear Nina,

Some friends and I were sitting around the other day and we were wondering where the term "Dildo" comes from, and we thought why not ask Nina?  So do you know where the term came from?

The Dick Dock

Dear Dick Dock,

Wow, this is certainly one of the more colorful questions I have received. I did say I was here to help, so here we go!  I hope this isn’t a sign of your own Valentines celebrations...

In my research I came (no pun intended) across some very interesting facts.  For example did you know that there is a small town right here in Canada named Dildo?  Located in Newfoundland, population 1200 - that must be one happy town!

But to be honest, it is believed that the term "dildo" originates from the Italian word "diletto" which in turn originates from the Latin term "delectare" - to allure or delight. The term originated in America from Italian American slang, and as they say, the rest is history.

I must say that "dildo" isn’t the most pleasant sounding word in the dictionary.  On the flip side the, user of such an item will be making many pleasurable sounds themselves – enough to make up for the unpleasantry of the word itself!

Happy Valentines Day to you all!

Love Nina
