Since 1987, One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Theatre has become a leader in Canada’s experimental theatre scene. Throughout the month of January a variety of venues will be hosting performers from around the world. The rodeo promises to truly have something for everyone, whether they be performance art aficionado, dance lover, art techno geek, indie music fan, or all round Rodeo fanatic and One Yellow Rabbit admirer.
There are a number of acts that will be of interest in general to the gay and lesbian community. From January 25th to 27th Nathan Cuckow brings his hysterical one man act "Stand Up Homo" to the Big Secret Theatre. Cuckow plays a gay stand up comedienne who is wracked by a Mormon upbringing and its inevitable thwarting of his sexual being. A multitude of characters come to life through Cuckow including his father and tranny sister "Princess." The show has been receiving rave reviews and slaying Fringe Audiences, and is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
From the 15th to the 17th, Los Angeles’ "The Suicide Girls" brings to the Big Secret Theatre their fondness for dressing up in fishnet, garters and pasties made of electrician’s tape – even dressing down to little more than pincushion piercings and panoramic dinner plate sized tattoos. Having received rave reviews from Spin Magazine, MTV and Foo Fighter frontman Dave Grohl, Suicide girls was originally an online community and now features a touring burlesque show that promises to entertain and titillate. You can get a sneak preview of what to expect at www.suicidegirls.com. Their last show in Calgary was packed so make sure you get tickets now.
Vancouver’s Boca del Lupo-Italian for "mouth of the wolf" visits the Vertigo Playhouse theatre from the 13th to the 15th. The group has emerged as one of Canada’s leading exponents of surreal physical theatre. Recently they met kindred spirits in the form of San Banquito Teatro, a company from Léon, Mexico. Together, they’ve adapted a 1920s Soviet satire about an unemployed man who, when a sausage in his pocket is mistaken for a gun, is wrongly presumed to be contemplating suicide. This engaging comedy won the 2004 Alcan Performing Arts Award. One Yellow Rabbit is very excited about this show and it will be another popular event for which you’ll want to get tickets as well.
"Difficult to describe but easily grasped," is the best words used when talking about "Between Science and Garbage." Montreal animator Pierre Hébert teams with San Francisco digital music pioneer Bob Ostertag to create a live film. Hébert makes images by drawing marker on paper, chalk on chalkboard, blowing dust on mirrors, and manipulating piles of garbage. Ostertag records the sound of the detritus while also spawning shapes on a digital drawing tablet. The pair are in action January 28 – 29 at the Big Secret Theatre.
The event will also play host to performers from Ireland, New York City, Eastern Canada and Alberta. For a full list of all performances, check out the events section of the magazine. The High Performance Rodeo will truly be an experience for all of your senses, whether attending one show or picking up a rodeo pass.
