For more than a decade, 17th Avenue’s Wicked Wedge has been providing a healthy alternative to the regular pizza. Voted best pizza in the city numerous times, they use only the freshest toppings on their part whole wheat herbed crust.
The pizza selection varies by day, but from reading the menu, you can’t help but be impressed with the variety of unique toppings and sauces Wicked Wedge uses, such as artichoke hearts, Spolumbo’s sausage, grilled lime chicken, and portabella mushrooms. They also have more traditional fares and toppings like pepperoni, green pepper and tomatoes. The night we ventured out, we all shared giant slices of "The Grassy Knoll," "The Wicked Aloha," "The Hammer" and "The Cheeseball".
The Wedge offers a different vegetarian selection each night. The Grassy Knoll is topped with green olives, banana peppers, green peppers, spinach and Parmesan. The Wicked Aloha is a twist on the classic Hawaiian with tomato, mushroom, pineapple and black forest ham. The Hammer is a unique pizza topped with chicken, roasted rosemary potatoes, with fresh rosemary and garlic-shallot sauce – all topped with asiago and mozzarella cheese.
All off the pizzas were incredible! A pizza with potatoes on it may seem odd, but "The Hammer" ended up being a group favorite. The garlic isn’t overpowering and all the flavors blend together nicely. The choice of black forest ham on "The Wicked Aloha" really enhances the Hawaiian taste and makes it stand out. Banana peppers really add bite to "The Grassy Knoll" – I do not usually like vegetarian pizza’s but was quickly converted. "The Cheeseball" pizza was a fantastic blend of cheddar, mozzarella, feta and Parmesan. For those who like their pizzas plain, this is a change from the everyday that you will love.
Eating so much pizza works up a thirst, and Wicked Wedge is proud to be the only establishment on 17th avenue to offer Boylan Sodas. These sodas are made with sugarcane extract (instead of the regular sugar/glucose-fructose), giving it a less sweet, all natural flavor. We decided to sample the entire product line and were pleasantly surprised. The Cola is traditional style, having a more spicey flavor – brings back memories of Heritage Park! The Grape was delicious, tasting like natural grape juice with slight carbonation, while the Orange has a suttle tangerine flavor. The Crème Soda and Ginger Ale are mild and refreshing. The Birch Beer (similar to Root Beer) is especially tasty, full of flavor without aftertaste. It’s a great alternative, but Wicked Wedge does carry regular pop as well as Jones Soda.
Sitting down for pizza and pop is a frequent tradition for many people. Wicked Wedge takes that tradition and twists it in creative ways. Whether for lunch, dinner, or a late night snack your cravings will be satisfied at Wicked Wedge. Grab a slice of take out, or give them a call for delivery!
