Victoria’s Restaurant: A treat for the senses

For twenty years, Victoria’s Restaurant has been enticing Calgarians with tasty meals in a charming Victorian atmosphere.

Menu offerings vary to appeal to every taste. The Brunch menu features various egg dishes including quiche, and Eggs Benedict and omelettes. Some of the featured appetisers are escargot, Gourmet Pate, Spinach and Artichoke Dip, Calamari, and Spanikopita. They also offer an assortment of salads and pastas. For those who crave a more "Simple Fare", items including Veggie and Chicken Caesar Wraps, Reuben and Clubhouse Sandwiches as well as different types of burgers are also available – each accompanied by a choice of salad, fries or soup. Tantalizing entrees such as Mediterranean Lamb, Salmon and Fresh Salsa, and Turkey Tettrazini are also on the menu. Some of the entrees offered are classics – available since the restaurant opened in 1984 – Shepherd’s Pie, Perogies, Cabbage Rolls, Traditional Meatloaf and Liver and Onions.

Visiting on a Saturday afternoon in December, we decided to try some of Victoria’s lunch offerings.

For starters, we tried the Camembert Cheese Plate and the Coarse Salt and Pepper Dry Ribs. The Cheese Plate, consisting of fried breaded and floured Camembert complemented flawlessly by a tangy warm fruit coulis, was an instant hit at our table. The Dry Ribs, supplemented by carrots, celery and a dill dip, were crispy and perfectly salty.

We tried the soup of the day, the Chicken Burger, and Martha’s Salad. With lots of meat and vegetables, the Beef Pepper Pot Soup was a hearty and impeccably spiced dish. The Chicken Burger, accompanied by a jalapeño dipping sauce and made with a large, crispy chicken breast, had a distinctive taste, which we all enjoyed. And, finally, the Martha’s Salad was a perfect marriage of flavour. The crispness of the candied walnuts and the lettuce were a pleasant contrast with the poppy seed dressing and pears.

The desserts available on any given day vary, with carrot cake, apple pie, and the caramel apple cheesecake included in the offerings on the day we visited. We decided to try the two versions of gelato – crème caramel and eggnog (a festive addition to the menu). Both were the perfect ending to a delightful meal.

Look for menu changes – coming soon.
