Timothy’s 10th street location has long been a popular gathering place for the gay & lesbian community. Whether people-watching through the large bay windows or taking in the sunshine at the outdoor tables, it remains one of the places to grab a coffee, read a magazine or daily newspaper, and chat with your friends. They also offer wireless Internet access (through Telus Hotspot) if you’d rather putz around on the internet.
We recently visited Timothy’s for lunch to rediscover what they have to offer. Although they have a vast selection and hot and cold drinks (including Coffee of course!), they also offer some excellent food choices.
We decided to try some gourmet sandwiches. Made to order, we selected our choices from a checklist provided at the front counter. They offer 3 different types of bread, 7 varieties of meat, 4 types of cheese, 5 sauces and 5 options for veggies, making it a slight dilemma for us to select a good sampling among the 3 of us. My companion went for the basic Roast Beef with cheddar and mustard on white, while I ordered chicken with provolone and curry mayonnaise on multi grain bread. The veggies are fresh and crisp and the bread the right combination of crunchy on the outside and soft inside. The chicken was cubed, which made it a bit messier than the deli-style roast beef, but it was quite good, piled high with vegetables. The curry mayonnaise added a kick without being overpowering or spicy. The sandwiches are meals on their own, but those with a hearty appetite can round out their lunch or dinner with soup or salad.
It should also be noted for those on the way to work that Timothy’s also offers breakfast sandwiches – bacon and egg or western – to go with your morning coffee. In addition they have standard coffee shop fare such as muffins, bagels and fresh fruit.
Having heard good things about Timothy’s Ceaser salad, we decided to try that as well. It definitely lives up to the hype! Topped with large croutons, a tasty creamy dressing and shredded cheddar it was an absolute delight to munch on. The romaine lettuce was crisp and very fresh, but it’s the dressing is the secret to the greatness of this salad – tangy and flavorful. A crouton is often a hard thing to get right, but Timothy’s are perfect, just enough crunch to them without feeling your teeth are going to fall out.
Since it was a warm day, we decided to try some of their popular smoothies. We decided to sample white chocolate truffle and cookies and cream for the coffee flavored drinks, and then tropical blast and berry blast fruit smoothies. The cookies and cream contains chunks of Oreo and goes down smoothly, while the white chocolate truffle is rich without being overly sweet. The fruit smoothies blend an assortment of fruity flavors. The tropical blast featured orange, pineapple, passion fruit and banana, while the berry blast combined raspberry, strawberry, blackberry and blueberry. Both are very refreshing and an ideal choice when you’re looking for something different. We also tried the multi-layered dark chocolate truffle machiatto. When stirred the flavors blend together into a warm tasty coffee.
To finish off our meal, we chose two desserts. It was difficult to make a decision as Timothy’s offers a variety of cakes, squares, biscotti, and tarts. We ended up deciding on the fruit tart and the chocolate brownie obsession. The tart was nice and sweet, but the three of us devoured it in a matter of seconds. Praise must be heaped upon the brownie obsession, which blends chocolate and marshmallow on a chocolate crust topped with nuts. If you are a chocoholic, this snack is certainly for you. For once I am at a loss for words, so the best thing to say is that I bought a second one and took it back to the office for a friend, who took one bite and after moaning said "I love you for this."
