Transsexuals File Human Rights Complaints Against Province

Released: Monday April 13, 2009 (Edmonton/Calgary) - AlbertaTrans.org

On the morning of Wednesday, April 15th, members of Alberta’s transsexual community will collectively file human rights complaints. Filings will occur at 10:00 a.m. at each city's Regional Office of the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission.

  • Edmonton's Human Rights and Citizenship Commission is located at 10405 Jasper Avenue.
  • Calgary's Human Rights and Citizenship Commission is located at 525-11th Avenue SW.

Each event will include trans people who live “stealth” (are not known to be trans or do not wish to disclose that they are trans) and may not wish to be interviewed – we ask that all media please respect their privacy.

Each event will also have a number of “out” or openly disclosed transsexual people who are willing and will be prepared to discuss why this action is absolutely necessary.

Both collective human rights complaint filings are peaceful and respectful activities. We hope that media or public observing these important events will take the opportunity to learn more about the necessity of GRS and dispel some of the many myths about transsexuals.
