The Gay and Lesbian Alliance / Lethbridge Area (GALA/LA) is proud to present a spring line-up of films.
New Queer Cinema: a film series is a selection of independent queer film from the past several
decades. The film series spans genres from documentaries and musicals to murder mysteries and kitschy
cult films.
Each week from March to May, films are shown at the Bowman Arts Centre (811 - 5 Ave S) starting at 7
pm. The films are intended for adults. Everyone is welcome to attend and bring a friend. The film series
is free but donations are welcome.
"The independent film had a central role in a struggle for self-representation" says New Queer Cinema
organizer Josh Pavan, "and it's important that we provide access to this cultural heritage."
“The selection of films share the personal, political, and cultural experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
trans-identified people. They address aspects such as understanding, acceptance, isolation, building
relationships, and creating community,” Tyler Gschaid, president of Gay And Lesbian Alliance of
Lethbridge said.
“This is the first time GALA/LA has presented a film series like this. It is great opportunity for our
members and everyone in Lethbridge to watch and appreciate these creative expressions. We also hope
these films will spark ideas for local film makers and encourage them to make a submission to the Rhino
In The Room film festival (www.rhinointheroom.tk) being presented in Lethbridge this September,” Tyler
added.
The next film in the series will be the movie-musical “Zero Patience” by acclaimed Toronto director John
Greyson. It screens Thursday, April 2 at 7 pm, upstairs at the Bowman Arts Centre (811 - 5 Ave S).
While the steps at the Bowman are being repaired, patrons are invited to use the back entrance.
