A NEW COMMISSION REFLECTING CANADA’S CULTURE AND LANDSCAPE
To mark Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) presents a large-scale work celebrating our nation’s cultural diversity. The world premiere of True North Symphonic Ballet takes place at Calgary’s Jack Singer Concert Hall on October 28, 2017. This project captures Canada’s cultural mosaic in majestic, symphonic scope by bringing together five award-winning Canadian composers – Dorothy Chang (Vancouver BC), Derek Charke (Wolfville NS), Vince Ho (Calgary AB), Maxime McKinley (Montreal QC), Dinuk Wijeratne (Halifax NS) – and critically acclaimed choreographer Yukichi Hattori. Also featured will be music by acclaimed performer and cultural leader Hal Eagletail from the Tsuu T'ina Nation. This ground-breaking collaboration was commissioned by the CPO for Canada’s 150th anniversary through the DeBoni New Works Programme.
"Canada is a nation where diverse peoples have collaborated to create a great nation. The True North project musically parallels that history – we have an incredibly talented group of creators from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, collaborating to create a great work of art," says Paul Dornian, President & CEO of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra
