An array of exciting local artisans, food vendors and live music expected to draw thousands
Southcentre Mall is set to host a series of four weekends of the popular Calgary Night Market kicking off on June 2 and 3 and continuing on June 30 and July 1, July 28, 29 and August 25, 26. Running each evening from 5 – 11 p.m. with free admission for the whole family, guests of all ages will enjoy exploring the maze of stalls featuring local artisans and food vendors, some of Calgary’s best food trucks, the entertainment of buskers and spirited live music.
Founded by Jeannette Medrano, the event draws inspiration from the diverse and colourful night markets in her home country of the Philippines. Recognizing an opportunity for such an event in Calgary, Medrano set out more than a year ago to bring the concept to life. After seeing success in various locations in downtown Calgary, Southcentre has stepped in to bring the event further South.
"There’s a hunger for entertainment in South Calgary," said Southcentre Mall’s General Manager Shawn Hanson. "We saw this as an opportunity to acknowledge some of our incredible local talent as well as bring the community together in one place to celebrate Calgary’s beautiful summer nights."
The event is also meant to support local businesses and artisans. As a jewelry designer herself, Medrano found it challenging to break into markets where there is stiff competition. She sought to provide an avenue for local businesses and artisans to showcase their products and get their names out to the public.
"In partnering with Southcentre this summer, we’re really focused on finding that special mix of vendors to appeal to all ages and interests," commented Medrano. "We want our guests to enjoy the fun atmosphere with their friends and neighbours and even bring out their pets!"
The Calgary Night Market can be found in the Southcentre Mall Parking Lot SE adjacent to Anderson Road SE. Vendor applications are still being accepted for all dates throughout the summer with a standard 10x10 space ranging from $160 - $250 for the full weekend.
