Now in its third year, Carol of the Belles brings a dozen Calgary artists together to celebrate the season and raise important funds for Calgary Sexual Health Centre’s WiseGuyz program, helping Junior High boys reframe their ideas of masculinity to include emotional literacy, consent, empathy and a deep appreciation of healthy behaviours and relationships.
The concert began as the music community’s response to many recent high-profile local and national stories of misogyny and sexual assault, including Jian Gomeshi’s trial.
With the recent election results in the U.S. this event has become, unfortunately, even more relevant, and the importance of programs such as WiseGuyz even more critical.
"When a community, a culture, is being told effectively by its leadership that violence against women is ok, that LGBTQ rights do not matter, that protection will be withheld from those who need it most, we need to teach the next generation that there is a better path to take. And while we are distanced from the mire of US politics, this message easily crosses borders" says Kenna Burima, the local musician who has programmed the event.
But while the subject matter that has prompted the concert may not be conducive to celebration, the event itself is a warm, family-friendly celebration of community, of love and of the spirit of the season.
"I was inspired by the Rita McNeil Christmas concerts I would watch growing up," reflected Burima. "I hope to capture that spirit with Carol of the Belles."
The concert will be hosted by comedian Adora Nwofor, and features:
