Transgender Seeking by Sunny Drake
Third Street Theatre and Hillhurst United Church are proud to present the critically acclaimed Transgender Seeking by Sunny Drake, which stops in Calgary for one night before continuing on its 27 city tour in Australia! An exposing, funny and tender look at queer and trans relationships, the bold visions we have and our often hilarious struggles to live up to them. Run-ins with the anti-monogamy police about jealousy, online dating mishaps and figuring out whether to throw out or reinvent mainstream relationship ideals all combine in a smart, fast-paced take on dating in an age of social media and technology. This accessible piece of theatre features visually stunning, highly interactive projections and sound.
Transgender Seeking plays at Hillhurst United Church on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 7:30pm.
Artistic Director of Third Street Theatre, Jonathan Brower, says this is their fourth show with trans topics in the last 2 years, with this one being a humorous look at a topic some of us are all too familiar with: online dating. "After the amazing response we received after bringing Sunny’s show X to Third Street in September, we jumped at the chance to have his signature show in Calgary," says Brower. "Transgender rights and understanding are the next horizon of human rights and promoting visibility in creative ways is crucial. But this isn’t just any show - this is the type of personal confessional show that we've found gives the most insight into what it is really like to be a minority, marginalized, in this case from a trans person’s perspective. It highlights everyday challenges and humorous things that happen, and within the show, Sunny doesn't talk at the topic, he is the topic. It's heartfelt and accessible - a part of his experience that we can all get behind."
Pam Rocker, Affirming Coordinator of Hillhurst United Church, couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this unique show to their stage. "Most people are surprised that a faith community programs any queer content, but being a fully inclusive and progressive place is our very foundation," says Rocker. "In September we co-hosted two workshops with Sunny, alongside Third Street, and there was a pronounced desire for more events that address trans awareness and give opportunities to hear about others’ experiences. Partnering with Third Street again was a perfect fit – their desire to open up dialogue in non-traditional ways fits with our non-traditional performance space and speaks to the fact that our communities don’t have to be separated. And to have such a hilarious and gifted storyteller like Sunny taking us on this fun but poignant journey is a true honour."

"Beautiful, articulate, well considered and very sophisticated...Complex and difficult subjects are delivered in the most accessible and authentic way. It’s light hearted, fresh and wank free.... Sunny drake is a progressive queer visionary." (Samesame.com, Aus)
"Charming and disarmingly clever... Drake is one of those rare provocative performers who are uber smart but ultra cosy at heart... one of the most interesting and touching performances I’ve seen in a while. I learned something too, and I loathe learning when I’m out, unless it’s done with subtle talented panache....Mr. Drake. I’m a fan." (Eric Page, Gscene, Brighton)
"Sunny Drake’s show was a pleasure to behold, a sparkly moment in a life." (Wotever World, London Oct 2013)
