Whether you’re a pro or an armchair athlete, Activate Your Pride in a series of sports and recreational activities during the Edmonton Pride Festival. Edmonton’s GLBTQ community, friends and supporters are invited to Come Out and Play Day June 14 at the Kinsmen Sports Centre (9100 Walterdale Hill), an annual collaboration between the Arctic Frontrunners, Samsara Yoga, Free To Be Volleyball, Pride Tennis and Rainbow Slo Pitch. All events are open and free to the public.
The Arctic Frontrunners kick the day off with a run/walk from the Kinsmen Sports Centre through Edmonton’s scenic river valley beginning at 10am; experienced and novice runners are welcome to join in this activity.
An outdoor beginner-level Hatha yoga class with Samsara Yoga follows the run at 11am next to the outdoor tennis courts at the Kinsmen Sports Centre Participants should bring a mat or towel, along with the willingness to get their chakras flowing with positive energy.
After chilling out with yoga, Free to Be Volleyball and Pride Tennis take the courts from noon to 2:30pm. Free to Be Volleyball hosts players from across Alberta for a day of recreational drop-in volleyball on the grass, as well as a free BBQ for players and spectators, wrapping up at 2pm. Pride Tennis also welcomes players of all levels.
The day concludes as Rainbow Slo Pitch and the Edmonton Police Association compete in the annual, ever-amusing Rainbow Cup from 2pm to 4pm.
Each Come Out and Play Day activity is independently organized and coordinated by the dedicated volunteers from Arctic Frontrunners, Samsara Yoga, Free to Be Volleyball, Pride Tennis and Rainbow Slo-Pitch. Please note because these are outdoor events; they are all weather-dependent.
