Gone are the days when your options for meeting a member of the same sex were limited to the Internet or a night at “the bar”. Thanks to John and John Productions, a few Calgary gay guys can now take a page from their straight friends by succumbing to the fun times of speed dating. But don’t think of it like the straight single’s “last resort”, rather as a new horizon for gay singles.
Some people would argue that queers have perfected the art of speed dating already, with the notorious three-week relationship. Many of us have had them, and kind of go like this: I like him, then hmmm not too sure about him, and finally how soon will it end. This incubation process of the gay relationship can be even quicker and hopefully less painful.
“Gay speed dating is an alternative way to meet guys and create positive experiences where you could make friends, and maybe even find that special guy,” explains Gay Speed Dating organizer Mathew Chyzyk. “ It is all about having fun.”
With speed dating you will not have to worry about someone using an outdated photo or a phony profile as is often the case with chat sites. For the most part what you see is what you get. And at a speed dating event you can be pretty sure that the guys that are there have the same intentions as you, i.e. looking for some quality time and not a one-nighter. Starting with the same intentions may be the best way to get to the real questions answered, such as: What are you doing for the next thirty years? Or, are you into foosball? (Incidentally there is a foosball table in the marquee room if the answer is yes.)
Here is how the event will work. Registration is between 7:30pm and 8pm, and dating will commence from 8 to 9:30. Each speed dater will meet 10 – 12 guys, depending on attendance, for a period of five to ten minutes. After all this, you will rate your date on a score card. If this sounds like it might be to taxing you don’t have to worry - there will be a break in between so you can to collect your thoughts and wipe away any sweat. If by chance your score matches up with one of your dates then John and John Productions will contact you to let you know which guys you liked and felt the same way about you.
The event is for guys between 19-25 years of age. If all goes well, John and John Productions is looking at branching out into other age groups. Registration is online (using Pay Pal) and closes on November 20th. The speed dating event will take place on Thursday, November 22nd at the Marquee Room, located on the second floor of the Uptown Stage and Screen movie theatre. The ticket cost includes a free drink and appetizers to comfort you after the your marathon of guys. From 10pm onwards there will be plenty of dancing, music, and the forever-awesome foosball table.
