In the hustle and bustle of Christmas time we often forget those who are left behind by circumstance. When low-income families are struggling to survive in this boomtown, affording a happy Christmas can be too much to ask. But it is an incredibly rewarding feeling to bring Christmas back to a child, especially when the whole family can be happy because of it.
Toys for Tots is one such event that helps make Christmas miracles happen for children who might otherwise miss out. Dr. Richard Denny has been organizing the event for the past 13 years, and will be held for its seventh year at Money Pennies.
The event was inspired by a similar project that he was involved with when living in Toronto. He held his first Calgary incarnation at his own home in 1994, and things would get quite crowded with around 50 friends and family members in attendance - it was a success, and it has continued to be ever since.
Participation is very simple - bring a toy down with you, add it to the pile, and enjoy an evening of holiday cheer and atmosphere. Denny says that sometimes people are inspired to even bring three or four toys! This year’s event will feature the musical styling of Toni Vere, a local folk musician, with lots of other entertainment and great food. After the last event, Country Furniture donated a truck to transport the toys to their destination at the Native Women’s Shelter and the YWCA, to be given out to those families in need.
Even if you are unable to attend that particular evening, donations are accepted at Money Pennies starting at the beginning of December. Cash donations are also accepted at the event in lieu of a toy.
Put a smile on a child’s face this year, feel good about yourself and demonstrate what Christmas is really about: giving.
