Movie musicals have regained popularity in recent years. However, as much fun as it is to watch movies such as RENT, Mamma Mia and Chicago on the big screen, nothing quite compares to seeing a live stage production. Such is the case with Hairspray. The film adaptation, featuring an all star cast including John Travolta in drag, was a smash hit in the summer of 2007. Fans of the movie will get the chance to experience the show live in Edmonton from November 11th to 16th, and in Calgary from November 25th to 30th.
Hairspray is based in John Walter’s 1988 film, focusing on the injustices of American society in the 1960’s, which starred Rikki Lake as Tracy Turnbladt! Set in 1962 in Baltimore, Hairspray is the story of plump teenager Tracy Turnbald, whose dream is to dance on local television program The Corny Collins Show. When her dreams come true and she lands a role, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star! But she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and racially integrate a TV network - all without denting her ‘do!
What is the appeal of Hairspray? It varies. Some love the 60’s R&B infused soundtrack that will have you tapping your feet and humming along. Others are taken with the spectacular choreography (choreographed by Edmonton’s Danny Austin) and costumes. At its heart however, Hairspray reflects on a piece of all of us. Many have at some point felt like a social outcast, wanted to be popular, been judged by the colour of our skin, our sexuality, our choice of clothing etc. Tracy’s character speaks to the underdog that we are at times, and can’t help but root for.
As is tradition, the role of Tracy’s Mom Edna is played in drag, on this tour by Jerry O’Boyle who has played the role in over 100 cities. The rest of the cast is filled out by talented and attractive performers who are sure to wow you on stage.
The Broadway production opened in 2002 and won eight of its 13 Tony nominations. The Broadway production closes in January 2009, so this may be your one shot to see this critically acclaimed musical spectacular for yourself.
