Considered one of the most scenic provinces in the country due to its mountain ranges, valleys, and variety of flora and fauna, Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand has become a top tourist destination for those seeking something different from the hustle and bustle of the south. Filled with temples, forests and the bustling capital of Chang Mai itself.

Journeying from the elephants of Anantara or towards Laos, one can easily spend the day stopping and exploring the number of historical sites, temples and sites. The most popular and remarkable are the contrasting black house and white temple. The black house, built by Kositpipat’s former teacher Thawan Duchanee, features multiple buildings that are home to an extensive collection of taxidermy and bones. Buffalo skulls, massive crocodile skins, and a whole elephant skeleton are just a few of the oddities that can be found while wandering the impressive grounds. It is both mysterious and interesting to explore.

7 kms away is the white temple. Built by artist and teacher Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, who has devoted his life to the project, this Buddhist temple is pure white and coated in tiny mirrors Surrounded by fountains and pools of water which are home to dozens of albino koi, the contrast between the black house and white temple is astounding. While the temple itself is beautiful, it is surrounded by creepy faces and a sea of hands reaching to the sky. These hands are believed to signify the trials, tribulations and temptations which can distract you from the true path to Heaven. The faces embedded in the ground are those who have fallen prey to such evils, therefore never making it to paradise. Admission to the temple is free.

One of the most spectacular temples in Northern Thailand is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Visitors can either take a tram up the mountain or brave the 309 steps to get to the top. Spectacular views await visitors both of the city below and the assorted temples and idols within. It is important to note that this is holy ground, and proper attire must be worn and footwear removed. The site is believed to have been founded in 1383 and expanded over the centuries. Buddhas made of gold or green glass, stone snakes and elephants, bells and a museum are there to explore. While it is easy to get "templed out" visiting some of the over 40,000 temples in Thailand, you do find yourself in awe of the artistry and peacefulness that comes in these ancient places.

Markets abound in the area. You can see how parasols are made and purchase them, buy clothing and even get custom painting done on your clothes. The artistry of people in the area is astounding and you can take home some amazing pieces as a memory of your visit.

The Anantara Chang Mai (http://chiang-mai.anantara.com/) was our host hotel for our one night in Chang Mai. Located just minutes away from the night bazaar and multiple art, culture and nature experiences the Anantara Chang Mai blends colonial architecture with Thai tradition. A spectacular view of the Mae Ping river awaits you as you rest in your luxurious room. The pool is perfect for a refreshing swim after a long day of exploring, or visit their spa for some extra relaxation. The Colonial House, a 90-year-old British consulate house turned restaurant and bar, features a shady teak wood deck overlooking our courtyard garden and the Mae Ping River. The service 1921 features a hidden door that leads to a private dining room. Our meal there was a mix of Indian and Thai dishes. Combined with a special treat of dancers for one of our parties’ birthdays, the Anatara Chang Mai was our shortest stay of the trip and we all wished we could have spent more time enjoying their kind and generous hospitality.
