Wintersleep may be one of the hardest working Canadian bands today. Having just returned home from Europe the bands November 16th show at MacEwan Hall is the bands third Calgary appearance in a year. Previous shows at SAIT and X-Fest, along with this fall cross-Canada tour are in support of their latest album The Great Detachment.

Kicking off with Santa Fe and Spirit off the new album, Wintersleep treated fans to an energetic show that featured songs from throughout their 15 year career. Singer Paul Murphy’s vocals were strong and the band was tight over the 90 minute set. Early highlights were Oblivion and Jaws of Life along with a big clap and sing along for Weighty Ghost – one of the bands biggest hits from 2007’s Welcome To The Night Sky.

Another telling song – the current single Amerika which was written well before the current election in the USA. As Murphy sang "What am I gonna do? I can't survive on my Amerika. If the worst is true, is it just a waste of time?" one couldn’t help feeling for our neighbours to the south. Often times music is a snapshot of our lives, good and bad. That a Canadian band could capture things so eloquently is quite remarkable.

Wintersleep has developed a passionate fan base that was clearly thrilled at the opportunity to see the band perform live again. The energy from the audience and band meshed together to make for an enjoyable night of Canadian music.
