Titus Andronicus

Bringing Shakespeare's bloodiest work to life

Theatre Review by Jason Clevett (From October 2013 Online)

After last season's successful collaboration between Ground Zero Theatre/Hit and Myth Productions and The Shakespeare Company that brought the highly entertaining William Shakespeare's Land of The Dead, it makes sense that the companies would merge their strengths for the bard's bloodiest play, Titus Andronicus.

A fictional tale about Roman general Titus Andronicus, who returns from war with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. After sacrificing her son, he opens the door to her wrath when she marries the new emperor Saturninus and begins a revenge plot against Andronicus and his family.

Shakespeare isn't for everybody, and in this case the level of violence may shock people. Although tastefully done, blood flows freely, hands fly through the air, and revenge is had. Written in an era when "revenge plays" were popular, it may not be Shakespeare's best work, but it is enjoyable.

It is accessible as well, once you become familiar with the speech patterns you are quickly absorbed into the story. Well directed, staged and performed, it was never boring and kept the audience engaged. While those that dislike Shakespeare's work won't find any enjoyment in the show, those that do will have a good time. With horror films remaining popular, it may also expose new fans to the work.

Titus Andronicus is absolutely worth checking out. Catch it until October 5th at the Vertigo Studio.(GC)
