7,000 fans headed to the Saddledome for a blast from the past, as Swedish duo Roxette returned to Calgary for the first time in 20 years. Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson are in their 50's now, but for those that danced around their living room singing "The Look" or
cranked "Joyride" while cruising down the highway, it was like 1992 all over again.
Kicking off with "Dressed for Success" the hour and 45 minute set was filled with hits, hits and more hits. Fredriksson's voice was a little shaky at first, but when she stood on stage in the spotlight for a stripped down version of "Spending My Time", the voice that sold millions of records was back. While some of the lesser known songs like "7twenty7" and
"She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio)" recieved a warm response, it was songs like "Sleeping In My Car" and "Dangerous" that really got the voices in unison.
"This song took us from cold Sweden to hot Hollywood," Gessel stated before Fredriksson lead the crowd in the chorus of their biggest hit "It Must Have Been Love" from 1990's "Pretty Woman."
The concert wrapped up with "Listen To Your Heart," "The Look" and "Church of Your Heart." All too soon the concert was over.
A decade ago it appeared that a Roxette tour would never happen again, as Marie Fredriksson had a brain tumor removed, and basically had to re-learn many things. To see her on stage is inspiring, and was emotional for the many Roxette fans who never thought they would get to see the band again. With the warm reception, hopefully they don't wait another 20 years to come back.
Canadian opening band Glass Tiger seemed like the perfect fit. One of my first concerts was a Glass Tiger show at Calaway Park (yes, they used to have concerts there)! Singing along to songs from our youth like "Thin Red Line", "Someday" and the crowd rousing "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" was a fitting beginning to the night.
Whatever your age, or memories, for one night Roxette took us back to our past, like it was 1992 all over again. It was a hell of a Joyride.
