So its that time of year again… shopping, Christmas parties, carols, and best of all: decorating! Ok, so maybe not everyone gets this excited about decorating for Christmas but I think it’s because it has been the same routine for years. We are all still stuck on the Red and Green color scheme with huge velvet bows, poinsettias, and fake green garland everywhere! This year, try to change up the tone of Christmas - make it dramatic with splashes of color, and by thinking outside the box.

So why do we insist on getting pissed off? We unwittingly imYes, it is ok to remain traditional and stick with the old-school Christmas, but to be a little more forward thinking and fashion conscious lets re-vamp Christmas and make it a festive occasion for drama! What other holiday can you glitz up the glam with sparkle and color?

Think of gorgeous turquoise hits, with white, this contrast will be perfect for the holiday season. You can add in silver and clear glass accents for the extra sparkle. Incorporate a white Christmas tree for a touch of whimsy unexpectedness and instead of fake green garland, go with white. It’s all about wowing people with your color choices. You could also do white and black, just make sure that the white is the more prominent color with the black as an accent. You don’t want Christmas to start looking morbid!

Fresh flowers are best no matter what season it is. I love to do something out of the ordinary and use different, more exotic types of flowers for the holidays. Think white orchids with luscious palms, or don’t have any flowers at all - just stick with different types of green foliage: palm fronds, banana leaves, or traditional Christmas greenery such as pine. I don’t think anything can beat the smell of fresh pine during Christmas. Do not be afraid to go to your favorite flower shop and ask them what flowers are in season – it will help you to decide on your flower choice. But remember, we’re trying to stay away from the red/green theme!

Clear glass vases, decanters, planters, etc. are excellent to incorporate into your holiday décor as they add sparkle to your space; plus there are so many different things you can do with them. Cluster a few different sized vases on a small table and fill them with water and floating candles – it’s a modern take on a traditional lantern. You can also fill larger vases with Christmas ornaments, but in keeping with you color scheme of course! These make dramatic centrepieces for any holiday table.

The key to Christmas décor boredom is to let loose and treat the holiday like a big fabulous party! Be dramatic and bold with your color scheme choices and I can guarantee your dramatic Christmas décor will be talked about for ages. Just don’t go overboard because you will probably have to top it next year!

Happy Decorating!
