Yes, it is once again that time of year. Whether you are dusting off your cowboy hat or just planning on walking with some dinosaurs, the Calgary Stampede and Edmonton’s Capital Ex are the places to be this summer.
Both festivals have some major events going on. While the past two years have seen heavyweight rock acts like Kid Rock and Bon Jovi at the Saddledome in Calgary, this year is an all country lineup that includes Reba, Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney and George Straight. Rexall Place in Edmonton doesn't have any concerts but will welcome _Walking with Dinosaurs_. The show has never played in Calgary, but I did have the chance to check it out last summer at Madison Square Garden in New York, and it truly is a mesmerizing experience.
This year, the Calgary Stampede and Capital Ex have great lineups of shows included in gate admission. The Stampede includes the subjects of some of our recent interviews, like Bif Naked and Serena Ryder, along with acts like Simple Plan, Terri Clark and Divine Brown. Capital Ex's Edfest stage will host Our Lady Peace, Paul Brandt, K-Os and _Deal or No Deal_ host Howie Mandell.
LGBT people frequently speak of community, and in a sense The Stampede and Capital Ex bring together our cities communities on a much broader sense. It's a chance to celebrate the summer with friends, relive some old memories, and make some new ones.
Whether it is the thrilling midway rides, carnival food, or cute guys and gals on the midway that draw your attention, it really does become a magical time in the city. I know I will be wandering the Stampede Grounds this year and hope you will join in!
