The answer is simple: type them in. Websites and E-mail addresses are automatically recognized and replaced with links. In the case of E-mail addresses, special steps are taken to embed them in a manner that Spammers are unable to see them easily.
Here are a few examples of Website URLs that are automatically replaced:
http://www.gaycalgary.comhttp://forums.gaycalgary.com
www.gaycalgary.com
forums.gaycalgary.com
But not:
gaycalgary.com
Here is an example of an E-mail address:
