When we asked Ryan Steele about his time on The Amazing Race Canada, he had no regrets. "To this day, it was the coolest, best thing I’ve ever done in my life. Everything was paid for, you’re travelling the world, you’re travelling Canada. I loved that it was still mostly in Canada, because when would I ever go to PEI? When would I ever go to Winnipeg or Ottawa and go to the cool places in those cities? It was such a great experience. I would love to do it again."
While it was certainly a fun time for him, his main focus is his project The Ryan and Amy Show, which he collaborates with fellow comedian Amy Goodmurphy. "We actually completed our first short film," he said, discussing the editing and tweaking process, and his hopes in submitting it into the film festival circuit. "We’re trying to put together our show as a pilot, as well, to try to sell to Netflix – or anybody who’d buy it, to be totally honest!"
It’s a labour of love – quite literally. "We’re still doing our live shows in Vancouver and making our Youtube videos. It’s an ongoing thing: Instagram, Facebook, trying to stay relevant and do your thing and have a full-time job, and partner, and family, then all your extra time has to go towards that. But we both love it."
We’re glad Ryan and Amy are still going, because we definitely need more videos like Busy Drag Queen in our lives (staring the indomitable Raye Sunshine). How did that whole concept come together, anyway? "One time I was in my Sunfire in Vancouver," Ryan recounts playfully, "on the corner of Thurlow and Davie with my friend Cassie. And there was a drag queen waiting for the light to turn so she could cross the street, and she had her luggage, and she was just like... she wanted that light to change so bad. And we looked at her and we were waiting for the light to change too, and my friend Cassie was like, "she is so busy right now." And I’m like "she is so busy, she has somewhere to go!" and it was just that easy. Busy drag queen."
Ryan is a lovely, energetic, charming guy, but we’ll stop here, and you can watch the rest of the video to see for yourself. Because readers, we’re busy.
