When I look back at some of my favourite plays in
Calgary since I started reviewing for GayCalgary Magazine, time and time again, Ground
Zero Theatre & Hit & Myth Productions has been one of my favorite
companies. Whether elaborate musicals (Urinetown; Evil Dead: The Musical)
goofy yet intelligent fun (Kung Fu Panties; Cock-tales) or intense and
thought provoking art (A Behanding in Spokane; Race) the team of Ryan
Luhning & Joel Cochrane seem genetically incapable of producing a bad show.
The trend continues with Gruesome Playground Injuries playing until
November 24th at the Vertigo Studio.
Dubbed "an accidental love story" it is the tale of Kayleen (Jamie Konchak) and
Doug (Patrick Maceachern). Meeting at the age of 8 in the nurses room – her
with stomach pains, he after riding his bike off the roof of the school – the
story unfolds through different points in their life, and the traumas that
bring them together and tear them apart.
The key to the show is the actors. Konchak has become one of my favourites in
Calgary and always captures my attention in any show she performs.
Maceachern is wonderful and makes the audience connect with Doug in a multitude
of ways.
If I had one critique, it is that I found myself wishing there was more of an
opportunity to connect with the characters as kids. Both actors bring to life the
innocence of childhood and lack thereof being a teen, with
enthusiasm, accuracy and without cliché. It is but one minor flaw, and lies
in the scripting of the show rather then the production itself.
It is hard to review Gruesome Playground Injuries much more without
giving away important aspects to the show. From creative production to incredible
performance, it is a must see. Don't miss out.
