Canadian Heritage cuts funding to Queer Arts Festival

After a tremendously productive three-year partnership with Canadian Heritage, the Queer Arts Festival (QAF) has just received notice that this partnership is not going to be renewed for the 2013 season. This is a startling blow to the festival, three months before QAF is scheduled to open. QAF is a vital creative avenue for queer artists, and an important and unique cultural offering to the public at large, being BC’s only multidisciplinary arts festival dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the unique creative expressions of the queer communities. We create positive social change by promoting compassion, empathy and understanding through the arts.
Canadian Heritage has funded QAF every year since 2010, with support growing 10% annually; by 2012 the grant constituted almost half of our government funding, and 17% of our total budget. When asked the reasons for the sudden reversal, Canadian Heritage representatives declined to give any details and insisted there were no specific areas of concern. We find ourselves baffled, because by every other indication, QAF is stronger than ever.
What began in 1998 as a tiny, grass-roots, volunteer-run, community-based visual art exhibition, has grown...
