Released: Wednesday December 11, 2019 (Calgary, AB)
The Hobbits are coming to the 15th Calgary Expo

This April, the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (AKA Calgary Expo) will celebrate its 15th anniversary, and is preparing to welcome more than 90,000 fans to Calgary for what has become one of North America’s largest celebrations of pop culture and fandom. #CalgaryExpo15 will take place April 23-26, 2020 at Stampede Park. Tickets for Calgary Expo will be available online only via, beginning December 4, 2019 at special early bird rates (expiring January 15, 2020).

To kick off celebrations, Calgary Expo announced a special event "Four Hobbits: An Unexpected Reunion" will take place; Elijah Wood ("Frodo"), Sean Astin ("Samwise Gamgee"), Billy Boyd ("Pippin"), and Dominic Monaghan ("Merry") will appear for the first time together in Canada at Calgary Expo 2020 and at an after-hours special event (event information coming soon). They are just the first guests to be announced for Calgary Expo, which in the past has brought superstar fan favourites like Michael J Fox, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Goldblum, and Neil Patrick Harris to Calgary. Guest news will continue over the next few months. Fans can meet celebrity guests at Calgary Expo at Photo Ops and at autograph signings (additional fees apply) and see them live on stage at Spotlight Q&A’s (included with all tickets).

"In 2006, I would have never believed you if you told me we’d be celebrating a 15th anniversary in 2020 with over 90,000 fans," said Kandrix Foong, Calgary Expo’s Founder and Managing Director of FAN EXPO HQ West. The first Calgary Expo featured one celebrity guest (Peter Mayhew) and attracted just over 3,000 fans and has since grown to be the biggest event of its kind in Western Canada. "I’m often asked, ‘why Calgary?’, and the answer is ‘Calgarians’. The Calgary show grew the way it did because of the hard work and passion of our crew and community. We became known for our hospitality and that reputation put us on the map. As we look back over these past 14 years and plan for the 15th anniversary, it’s very clear to me that we wouldn’t be here without a legion of support from this city and I’m very grateful."

As a special holiday treat, select Calgary Expo 2020 tickets will be available in person at the Calgary Expo Holiday Market, November 30 at the BMO Centre Hall B, at the best possible price: early bird rates and no service fees. Premium and Four-Day Passes ($115 and $85 respectively, compared to $140 and $110 regular price + service fees) will be available, along with Kids Tickets (cash and credit only).

Calgary Expo Holiday Market is Calgary’s geekiest holiday shopping event – guests can shop for pop culture treasures from specialty vendors and artisans, commission custom art from their favourite artists, pose in holiday style on the *new* Cosplay Red Carpet, and more. Of course, Santa and his Christmas Stormtroopers will be on hand for official Photo Ops by donation (along with other fan favourites like Jack Skelington), and all funds raised will support the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Southern Alberta). The Calgary Expo Holiday Market is one-day only, November 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Celebrations for the 15th Anniversary will of course feature the return of the POW! Parade of Wonders, one of the biggest cosplay parades in the world, presented in partnership with Downtown Calgary. POW! regularly attracts more than 3,000 cosplayers (along with a few special celebrity guests) and over 20,000 spectators, to officially kick off the Calgary Expo in true fan style. The 8th Annual POW! Parade of Wonders will take place April 24, 2019.
