Released: Wednesday June 20, 2012 (Edmonton, AB) - Works Art and Design Festival

The Works Art and Design Festival has arrived. Join the celebration with more than 400 artists showcased in 31 sites housing over 50 exhibitions and live events, FREE of charge!

The Works National Aboriginal Day Celebrations keep you entertained until the sun goes down. Aboriginal dubstep and tribal hip hop rhythms will echo throughout Churchill Square as The Works welcomes A Tribe Called Red: Electric Pow Wow; Red Power Squad; Peoples Poets & Co.; and Wab Kinew.

DJ Nik 7 and Jaycie Jayce (Shout Out Out Out Out) will help send the show to Moriarty’s Bistro and Wine Bar for The Works Opening Night Party. Tickest are $5 at the door and you’ll get a chance to glimpse the artwork of Montreal art collective En Masse, who are painting the 2012 Works Gateways.

The Oti Nîkân Leadership Academy will raise a tipi on Churchill Square at 11 a.m. today in honour of National Aboriginal Day. For First Nations peoples, the tipi functions as a home and a prayer space. For the duration of the Festival, Oti Nîkân’s tipi will serve as a display area for Aboriginal youth artwork.

Don’t forget to visit the Works Big Tent for Indigeneity and PopSex!, two controversial exhibits about two controversial topics—modern representations of Native culture and modern representations of sexuality— that promise to stir artistic debate.

The Works Stage features the best in live music from Canada and around the world. Enjoy Blues, Folk, Rock, Indie, Alternative, Funk, world, Native and multidisciplinary performances.
