Abortion Monologues SOLD OUT pre-show
Released: Monday January 25, 2010 (Calgary, AB)
The controversial new play, The Abortion Monologues arrives in Calgary, Alberta on February 4th, 2010 after its successful premier in the United States.
The Abortion Monologues follows the stories of 19 women who reveal the details of their lives, families and relationships as they tell the stories of their abortions. Sometimes funny, often heartbreaking and always thought-provoking, this play exists in stark contrast to the real world, in which women seldom publicly discuss this common and difficult choice.
The Abortion Monologues has been the talk of Calgary lately, in many controversial discussions on CBC radio, CJSW, online and soon in Maclean’s Magazine. Jane Cawthorne hopes that this play will spark a more constructive debate, one that starts with the voices of women rather than with rhetoric or extremism. "Women’s voices, the realities of women’s lives and the conditions under which we all make our choices – this is what has been lost in the public discussion, and what I hope will be brought back, in part through this play."
The Calgary production is entirely comprised of local talents. It is Directed by Tarra Loïs Riley, founder and former Artistic Director of Broad Minds Theatre. The Cast is includes 19 brilliant local actors, some of them up-and-coming and some established talents. The production will be performed at the Leacock Theatre at Mount Royal University.
