Decades before RuPaul’s Drag Race started showing dragqueen culture in the mainstream, the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose (ISCWR) had been a prominent figure in Edmonton’s LGBTQ+ community. The organization has been around since 1976 highlighting Edmonton’s drag scene while also fundraising money for Edmonton’s charities and scholarships for queer youth to help them further their education.

Every year at Coronation, the current reigning Emperor and Empress step down, hand out cheques to the charities and queer youth for scholarships, and at the end of the night they crown the newly elected Emperor and Empress. The event has people coming from across North America to celebrate the hard work the organization has done over the year. If you enjoy drag or want to be in a regal setting, this is the event to be at. The event is about 6 hours long with a combination of drag, regal entrances, and several speeches. There is no dancing, but the focus is all about great drag entertainment, drinking and delicious food from the host hotel, the Edmonton Inn and Conference Centre. Just about every year, there is a moment that will touch the audience hearts, so if you attend, have tissues ready to wipe tears away.

Throughout the rest of the year, the ISCWR will do smaller events either at the host hotel or at other venues in Edmonton. Representatives of the organization will also travel to other cities in North America to attend those cities Coronations and promote Edmonton’s LGBTQ+ events. The group is volunteer driven, and they are acknowledged every year by both municipal and provincial governments for what they do for Edmonton’s LGBTQ+ community.

If you are heading out on the town in Edmonton and want to see a good drag show that is also raising money for charity, check out the ISCWR website for upcoming events and locations. Coronation is scheduled for the 4th weekend in August. Most people will stay at the host hotel, so they can change outfits throughout the night or freshen up. It is an event not to miss.
